The word stray means lost, wandered off and separated from one’s owner, I personally would be terrified if this should happen to me. So many pets around the world are classified stray as soon as it has been found wondering the streets.

Irrespective how the animal became lost normally is not the problem, the problem though is what happens to these animals afterwards. All over the world the rules are basically the same, all pet owners are responsible for their pet’s deeds and wellbeing but it seems that that is one of the last things on most owners’ minds.

In Namibia the laws state clearly that all pet animals should be kept on premises where they cannot escape, or on a leash when walking, their basic needs to be seen to as well as vaccinations to limit the spread of diseases, but the most important law that I would like to see in place is that all pets be sterilized, or in the case of breeders a breeders license be put in place with rules and regulations, as well as strict control on all premises. Accidents do happen and therefore each town in Namibia has a dog control department that will attend to most stray animals on the streets. But that is not enough we need stricter rules on not how many animals is on the property, but how many unsterilized pets are on that property. The law or licensing should be for all animals kept on properties that are unsterilized.

Overpopulation was created by humans, humans now must take a stand to end it as this has caused that thousands of dogs and cats has to die yearly. I personally think that euthanatizing should not be an option, although I personally have been involved in euthanizing animals, as there is no other option. There are more dogs and cats in Namibia than there are people and for that reason what are we doing about it?
